It doesn’t matter how big or small your closets are you can organize your closet space with a few simple tips. No matter where the closet is located or what it stores the basics will remain the same for the most part.

Organize Your Closet Space

Organize Your Closet SpaceChoose the closet that bothers you the most to start with. Empty it all out, go through the contents of the closet and decide what you do not want. If it is broken or missing parts through it away. If it is something that you know you do not want or will not use then put it aside to donate it.

Clean off the shelves and the floor. Now get ready to put everything that belongs in there back in. Take a look at the closet and the space you have to work with. You want to figure out how to make the best use of all of it.

Does this closet have a hanging rod that you don’t need? Could you make better use of it if there were more shelving?

Even if you need the hanging rod could you add shelving onto the inside side wall? Just by adding a shelf or two can make a huge difference.

Baskets and bins are the best solution for closet organization. You can place all like items into a bin. Everything from hats and gloves, scarves, cleaning supplies, gadgets and gizmos, you name if its small enough it can be organized in baskets.

The baskets can then be placed on the shelves. You can even get stackable bins and baskets to get more out of your shelf space.

Follow these tips to organize your closet space and you will have a clean, decluttered, and organized closet in no time. Once your closet is finished you only have to repeat the process every 6 months when the season changes.

How to Organize Your Clothes Closet

How to Organize Your Clothes Closet

I do not like the saying if you don’t feel comfortable in it or you don’t especially like it throw it away. Okay sometimes we need some grubby clothes for yard work, or painting, or whatever. Sometimes you might want that big stretched out over sized t shirt to sit around and be comfortable!

You might have an outfit or two that you keep for only nice occasions. While you don’t wear it but once or twice a year if you toss it then what are going to wear when an occasion comes up? I don’t think this idea works for all of us.

What I do like is Discardia’s closet trick. It is taking all the hanging clothes in your closet and turning around the hangers so that they are backwards to you. When you wear a piece of clothing turn the hanger back around to the normal way. At the end of 6 months anything that is still turned around the wrong way you could consider giving away.

Organizing Kids Closets

Organizing Kids Closets

When you are organizing kids closets you need to think in terms of staying small to avoid a daily mess. Following the same instructions as above, clean out the closet completely.

Your children’s clothes are small and can be kept on hangers with shelves above and below the closet rod. You can even incorporate 2 hanging rods on one side with shelves on the other.

Use baskets and bins to store toys and other trinkets. If your child is still in diapers you can store the diapers and supplies in a bin in the closet. You may even put a storage cube or a small dresser in the closet for added storage.

Place toys and books on shelves that are easy to reach. Color coordinate and label storage bins. Keep everything that is okay for your child to have in one color. Put things that you do not want to them have place in a different color and place towards the top of the closet out of their reach.

Encourage your kids to help you so that they can give you some of their own ideas as to where they would like to keep their favorite things and they would like to sort their items.

The hardest part of organizing kids closets is teaching your child to help keep it organized. Letting them help declutter and put things away will greatly increase your chances of staying organized.
